After Launch batch fixes #2

To Continue...

Web Opac
  • Other Library Resources:
    • Retitled A to Z List of E-Resources and added a phrase explaining the term "e-resources" to the paragraph below.
    • Fixed the broken link to Quick Link to Encyclopedias...
  • Slow loading pages -- although this an inconsistent problem, and we are not sure what causes this, I thought that cleaning up some code that calls scripts and style sheets might help.
    • opacmenu.html and mainmenu.html
    • toplogo.html {This file is called by a token on all other pages.}

LS Web
  • Retitled "Browse All E-Resources by General Subjects" to "Find Articles and Research Information by General Subjects."
    • Rationale: This is the page that is linked to "Find Articles and Research Information" on the home page, so this wording would be more consistent.
  • Similarly, retitled "Browse All E-Resources Alphabetically" to "A to Z List of E-Resources."
  • Made a slight wording change to the left navigation box on 5 pages in the /eresources/ section to reflect better the changes above.
  • Similarly, "Selected Web Sites Recommended by ACC Librarians"; deleted the "selected."
    • Also, checked the A to Z list and changed "Internet Sites..." to "Web Sites..."
  • Reordered the list in the popup menu for "Find Articles and Research Information" to put A-Z List... first.

After Launch batch fixes #1

Thanks to Teresa for pointing out places of inconsisency in titles and wording.

Web Opac:
  • ebooks vs e-books (changed to e-book here since it was the standard elsewhere)
  • changed "class reserves" to be "course reserves" everywhere
  • made the specific search pages contain more "help" since the lead-in phrasing to the links to them was "Get more help searching..."
    • I added a link to the specific search tips (Search Hints) for each specific search page under the title on that page. So, under the title Author Search on that page, the link "Search Hints" goes directly to the search tips on searching for authors.
    • I added another specific search "Keyword" to the beginning of that group since that particular search page "Quick Keyword Search" has the grid on the page that gives help and examples for things like phrase searching or boolean operators.
  • added course reserves options to the drop menu. {Because of the nature of the search method at that point, it was better to add two options [Reserves (Course Name) and Reserves (Instructor)] that to send the user to the page with both options.}
      • Also went into the WWWOPTIONS and added those search options to the drop_down element
  • As I looked at the catalog pages, particularly the system-generated pages, I revisited an odd spacing issue and decided to change the iii standard style sheet to comment out the styling on the class browseSearchTool and browseSearchToolMessage That seems to have made the spacing better. [I need to continue to monitor that for bad side effects.]
  • I noticed that the heading on the results list for reserves searches was odd so sent a message to the Innopac Users Group list. I got a response within 15 minutes that there had been a change in the standard wwwoptions:
    • #RSRV_HEADER=Materials for this Course
      RSRV_HEADER=Featured Titles This Month
    • So, I fixed that. (Comment: must have copied someone else's wwwoptions and didn't notice this particular anomaly when I was changing the settings to suit our catalog.)

Nearing design switchover

As the time for the switchover nears, I keep finding the occasional file for reformatting, e.g., Search the Library Web Site. Fortunately, with these pages, the templates are already there and it is easy to cut and paste into them.

Today, I backed up the current site to my external drive. This is not truly necessary from a "what if it crashes" perspective since the server is backed up every night. However, from an archival standpoint -- and we do reuse ideas and sometimes need to see what we did -- it is important that those files be accessible to us in the future.

Tomorrow, I should be able to quickly rename the files remaining and delete extraneous files cluttering up the current site. Then I can simply copy over the "new look" files.

Mustn't forget to copy over the new web opac files to the live directory on the iii server as well.

The only undone kind of thing is to review the text-only files to make sure everything works correctly and all the files are there. I may have to do that the first part of June. However, it should all be there and everything should work correctly now.

PS -- I need to update the mindmap html files to reflect the updates and additions I've made to the actual mindmaps.

Update to Steps taken to Redesign

Here is a web page outlining the steps taken so far in putting together a
redesign of the LS web site. (created through Mindmanager Pro 6)

http://insideirt.austincc.edu/library/Lweb/design06/LSWeb-Redesign06/index.html

There is also a link to a web page on "page progress" on Next Step2 > Continue working on linked pages.

I'll try to continue to add to this as I finish up.

Page progress 5/7/06

I appear to be finished with the formatting of the gen-info pages -- those linked from the Find Services for Fculty and Students home page option >> and then those linked from the pages therein. You can check the Page Progress mind map for updates as I finish pages and think of others to do.

Some things I've thought of to do:

Globally replace /help/how/ with /help/FAQs/

Rename eresourcesXY.css to something like lib-resources.css and

  • Put in /scripts/
  • Then globally replace

--- link href="eresourcesYZ.css"

With

--- link href="http://library.austincc.edu/scripts/lib-resources.css"

Some things not to forget:

Be sure to check these things:
  1. that the web stats logger script is included before the ending header tag of each page
  2. that the dates are appropriate on the bottom
  3. that the links have all been changed to reflect the structure
